Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Discusses Crime After Another Violent Weekend

Four people were killed, and 47 injured in shootings over the weekend

Despite yet another violent weekend in Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfood said Monday she is standing by the Chicago Police Department's current strategies.

Four people were killed, and 47 injured in shootings from Friday night until early Monday. At a news conference Monday, Mayor Lightfoot said the numbers of overall shootings, victims and homicides are down.

However, she isn't satisfied.

"I think the strategies are working, but we are constantly calibrating them to make sure we are counting for the circumstances that are actually on the ground," Mayor Lightfoot said.

On Sunday, Aug. 11, an 8-year-old girl was shot in the leg while at a barbecue with her family in Humboldt Park. In the city's Garfield Park neighborhood, five women were shot while at an outdoor party.

Mayor Lightfoot said she is working on offering more resources to the neighborhoods impacted. She also said a lack of economic development is to blame.

"We are talking about decades. We are not going to make huge changes of a single summer," she said.
