Chicago Marathon Runners Ready to Endure Heat

Runners competing in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon will face a challenge they may not have expected.

More than 40,000 runners are expected to run in the race – and it’s likely they will have to endure the weather. The forecast calls for higher than normal temperatures, though many who are running say they will take it in stride.

"I'll push through it definitely, but it's a little nerve wracking,” said runner Jenny Bendy.

“I have to take care of my health,” runner Andres Gonzalez said. “If it’s hot, it might take me a little longer, but I’m planning to finish it.”

Some runners who are sprinting for charity are willing to tackle the conditions to support their causes.

“I am running for the Ronald McDonald House Charity and in honor of Claire Strawman,” runner Nancy Woodrich said. Strawman is a 14-year-old family friend who underwent a double lung and heart transplant.

"I'll have her name on me, and I'll wear my button and she's in my heart,” Woodrich said. More information on her charity can be found here.

But when Woodrich and others hit the pavement on Sunday, the conditions will be less than ideal.

High winds are also expected as well as temperatures reaching into the 70’s.

“We'll monitor weather tonight and tomorrow morning and make final adjustments for resources,” marathon director Carey Pinkowski said.

While conditions not ideal for runners, they will be ideal for fans. About 2-million people are expected to come out and watch along the marathon route.
