Legendary Runners to Return to Chicago for New Race on Marathon Weekend

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is once again bringing legendary runners to Chicago, this time for a new race.

The marathon's all-new International Chicago 5K in October will feature past champions and runners Steve Jones, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Constantina Dita and Deena Kastor.

The race aims to “celebrate both Chicago's international zest and the allure of running in a world-class city.”

Jones and Samuelson won the 1985 Chicago Marathon, both falling just shy of breaking world records.

Dita made her Chicago Marathon debut in 2003 and went on to win in 2004. She returned in 2005 to defend her title but was defeated by Kastor by a difference of 5 seconds.

"Steve, Joan, Constantina and Deena are global running icons who have inspired a generation of runners," Carey Pinkowski, Bank of America Chicago Marathon executive race director said in a statement. "I watched all of these athletes run bravely and become champions on our city streets. It is an honor to welcome them back to Chicago to celebrate our city's cultural diversity with the International Chicago 5K."

The International Chicago 5K takes place on Oct. 8, just one day before the annual Chicago Marathon steps off. starts at 7:30 a.m. at Daley Plaza, and ends in Grant Park near the Chicago Marathon finish line. Registration costs $35, and participants will receive a knit finisher hat. For more information or to register for the race, visit Chicago5K.com.
