Chicago Man Charged for Punching Pregnant Girlfriend

Prosecutors say a 23-year-old Chicago man allegedly punched his pregnant girlfriend during a fight, leading to the death of the unborn child.

The alleged attack took place July 8 at the apartment the couple and their 11-month-old child share in the 4700 block of South Paulina, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Christy Brewer alleged that Jovanny Martinez punched his 7-months-pregnant girlfriend repeatedly in the abdomen and arms so severely she thought her water broke.

The stillborn daughter was delivered at Mount Sinai Hospital. Prosecutors said Martinez was not the father of the unborn child.

Martinez was arrested Tuesday and charged with one felony count each of homicide of an unborn child, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery.

He is reportedly being held in lieu of $700,000 bail.
