Proponents take proposal off the table -- for this year

The original plan had been battered a bit and, some advocates said, watered down, so proponents of a gay high school in Chicago have taken the idea off the table.

Tough criticism from Mayor Daley and outspoken ministers had brought a split among the planners. 

The Chicago Board of Education was set to vote on the proposal at a meeting on Wednesday.  The authors of the plan, however, have asked that the item be removed from the agenda, adding that they would like to rework the plan and try again next year.
