Backdraft Blast Injures Chicago Firefighter in West Side Blaze

A Chicago firefighter was injured while battling a blaze Friday in the South Austin neighborhood on the city’s West Side, fire officials said.

A mayday call went out sometime before 4 p.m. as crews attempted to extinguish flames in the 100 block of North Lamon Avenue at what appeared to be a two-story residence. Officials said it was a "possible flash over" with a "rapid air blast."

Fire officials said all “members” were accounted for and one firefighter was going to Stroger Hospital in critical condition with injuries that were not considered life threatening.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family who lost their home.
