Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police on Monday said it is “outraged” by the ambush killings of two NYPD officers over the weekend.
“We want to let everyone know how sickening the circumstances and the events that transpired in New York were,” said Chicago FOP President Dean Angelo Sr. “What a monstrous and cowardly act that was.”
Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were shot in the head Saturday while in their squad car.
The man who shot the officers, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, wrote in an Instagram post that he was "putting wings on pigs" and referenced the police-involved deaths of the 43-year-old Garner on Staten Island and Brown in Missouri. Police believe Brinsley, who fatally shot himself in a subway station after killing the officers, was motivated by anger at police. Video captures him watching a protest in Union Square earlier this month, though authorities say he was not participating in it.
“The cases went forward, they were heard and they were adjudicated. It should have been the end of it,” Angelo said. “It is tough to stand by and watch people blast the people that protect each and every one of you in this room and each and every one of the people that are out there.”
The FOP says they have nothing but open communication with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and City Hall and Angelo said they look forward to continuing that communication.
He also noted that threats against police have put officers on high alert.

“We have to be on the edge constantly,” he said. “We don’t know when the next attack is going to come.”
Angelo said city officers will no longer respond to calls alone in squad cars and they will wait for backup to arrive, adding that that will likely impact response times.
