Chicago Cops Snag Florida Fugitive

International travler was wanted in custody case

A Florida fugitive wanted in a child custody case was located and captured by Cook County police earlier this month.

Victoria Okegbola, 28, a former Broward County, Florida resident and a Nigerian native, was wanted by Florida officials after fleeing the state with her 1-1/2 year-old son. Okegbola was engaged in a custody dispute with the boy’s father.

Authorities say Okegbola traveled to Nigeria and left her son with family before returning to the United States to pursue a nursing degree. A degree that would ultimately lead to her arrest.

Cook County investigators found Okegbola’s number after Florida authorities said she was in the Chicago area. An undercover investigator set up an interview with Okegbola at a local nursing agency. But instead of a prospective job, Okegbola was met by officers, who promptly arrested her.

Okegbola has been held at Cook County Jail since her June 4 arrest, and will travel back to Broward County to face charges. Florida officials are expected to escort her back today.
