Multiple members of a Chicago Police Department gang unit have been stripped of their powers after being accused of robbing drug dealers, the Chicago Tribune is reporting.
The FBI and the CPD’s Internal Affairs Division have been looking to the allegations against the officers, who are part of the Area Central gang team, the newspaper reports, citing law enforcement sources.
The investigation was sparked after an informant told federal authorities the officers robbed him, according to the Tribune.
"“Integrity and accountability are paramount to the Chicago Police Department,” CPD told NBC 5 in a statement. “To that end, we cannot comment on any investigation – internal or otherwise – until or unless criminal charges are filed.”
No one has been arrested but charges are expected in a matter of days.
