Burglar Stealing Packages From Bucktown Residents

A burglar is stealing packages from residents in Bucktown, according to police.

Robberies have been reported along the 1800 block of North Winnebago, according to police. Another similar robbery took place along the 1900 block of West Diversey.

“If anything, I think it was a little bit of a wakeup call for us,” resident Kelly Riegler said. “It isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s unfortunate that stuff had to get stolen. Hopefully they catch the guy so it stops happening.”

Another resident, Sandy Hensley, said she had five packages come for her but she didn't pick them up immediately. "When we went back the next morning for them there were only three left," she said.

Buildings in the area are posting photos of the suspect and reviewing security cameras.

“We started noticing some packages disappearing, some stuff that’s been left Amazon, UPS, that kind of stuff,” said Carl Gustas, who sits on a board of a local building. “That’s when we went to the video cameras and we started noticing somebody opening the front door, taking packages and riding off.”

A video shows a suspect approach by bike, open the door, then pedal away from the scene.

Some buildings are asking delivery companies to leave packages in obscure sites. Customers are oftentimes able to hold packages at their facilities for pickup.
