Bryant, Arrieta Named Finalists for Awards Tuesday Night

The Baseball Writers Association of America has named their finalists for several prestigious awards, and the Chicago Cubs are well represented among the nominees.

Third baseman Kris Bryant was named as one of the three finalists for National League Rookie of the Year, joining Matt Duffy and Jung Ho Kang as contenders for the trophy. The winner will be announced on November 16, and it’s widely expected that Bryant will take home the honors.

Bryant had a dominant season for the Cubs, setting records for most home runs (26) and RBI (99) by a rookie in team history. He batted .275 on the year and was instrumental in helping the team to their first postseason appearance since the 2008 season.

The Cubs also had their ace pitcher nominated for an award, as Jake Arrieta was named a finalist for the Cy Young Award in the National League. Arrieta mowed down the competition in the second half of the 2015 season, racking up an impressive 22-6 record with a 1.77 ERA and 236 strikeouts for the Cubs.

Arrieta will be competing with Los Angeles Dodgers hurlers Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw for the award, which will be handed out on November 18.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon was also named a finalist for the NL Manager of the Year Award, joining Cardinals boss Mike Matheny and Mets skipper Terry Collins. He helped lead the Cubs to a remarkable turnaround in the standings this season, winning 97 games and helping the team to their first postseason series victory in 12 years as the Cubs took down the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Division Series.

Maddon will find out whether he won the trophy when the league announces the Manager of the Year winners on November 17.
