Boy, 10, Drowns in Montgomery Lake

Officials said the boy was in the water about 45 minutes

A 10-year-old boy died Sunday after he was pulled from a lake in a small town near Aurora.

Sugar Grove firefighters rushed to Jericho Lake in Montgomery around 6 p.m. Sunday after the boy, whose name is being withheld by the DuPage County Medical Examiner's office, was reported missing.

According to the Fox Valley Park District, the 10-year-old was with his family at the park when he and his siblings went swimming in the lake. At one point his siblings lost sight of him, and when neither his siblings nor his parents could find him, they called authorities to report him as missing.

Montgomery Police, other law departments and fire departments, and divers from Sugar Grove and Aurora searched for the boy, simultaneously on land and in the water, though he was last seen in the lake. The divers found the boy in 12 feet of water about 25 feet from shore.

Officials said the boy was in the water about 45 minutes. He was rushed to Provena Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Fox Valley Park Districted extended "its sorrow and deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the victim," in a statement made on Monday.
