2nd Body Found Amid Search for Missing Pair in DuPage River; Recovery Efforts Continue

Authorities say that a man was spotted in the water, and that a woman jumped in to try to help him

Two bodies were found as authorities searched for two missing people near a DuPage River dam in southwest suburban Shorewood.

Police said crews were working to recover the bodies amid their search for a missing man and woman in the water. A man's body was found earlier in the day and a woman's body was located around 2 p.m., authorities said.

First responders received a call of a person in the water around 5:45 p.m. Sunday, according to officials. A woman saw a man in the water near the dam, and jumped in after him.

Police said the pair were at a nearby park together and the woman was trying to save the man in the water.

A witness who was at Hamel woods when the frantic search was called reported seeing two people apparently struggling to get out of the water. Recovery efforts so far were focused on an area near the dam where people have been reported stuck in previous years.

"It may not look dangerous to a lot of people but once you get into the boil it keeps turning and turning," said Troy Fire Chief Andy Doyle.

Numerous fire departments are assisting in the effort, including those from Troy, Wilmington, and Joliet, officials say.

Signs in the area warn people to stay away from the part of the river.

"The river varies in depth," Doyle said. "One minute you could be in three feet and the next minute it could be up to a foot."

Doyle said the first body was located in water between 3- and 4-feet high. The area near the dam can reach as high as about 6 feet from the river bed, Doyle said.

He added the temperature is also "extremely cold."

Details on how the man ended up in the water weren't immediately known.

"We don’t know why he went in... she went in after him but that’s all we really know," Doyle said.

The identities of the man, who authorities said was 28 years old, and the woman, who was 22 years old, were not released as of Monday morning.
