Police say the baby drowned after falling into a bucket of water.

Authorities are investigating the death of an infant who apparently drowned after falling into a bucket of water Saturday morning at his home in the Gresham neighborhood.

Police were called to the 8300 block of South Hermitage Avenue about 9:21 a.m. and have since opened a death investigation, police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.

Jahdane Tarver, 5 months, was pronounced dead at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park at 9:30 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Family members said the baby rolled off a bed and into a bucket of water by the bedside, police told the Tribune

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating an allegation of death by neglect against the baby’s mother, department spokesman Kendall Marlowe said Saturday night.

DCFS has not had prior contact with the family, and could not immediately say whether other children lived in the home, Marlowe said.

An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the infant’s death is scheduled for Sunday.

An investigation into the death is ongoing, Baety said.
