Baby Abandoned on New Year's Day

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a baby who was abandoned at a police station Friday afternoon.

The child, a hispanic girl approximately six months of age, was left at the Grand Crossing District police station, 7040 S. Cottage Grove Ave., about 3 p.m. in a black and silver Trend Expedition stroller, according to police.

The girl was wearing a pink jacket with butterflies and was wrapped in a multi-colored Winnie the Pooh blanket. She has diamond earrings and two teeth. She weighs 17 pounds, is about 25 inches tall, and has brown eyes and black hair.

Police are referring to the child as "Baby Jane Doe."

The abandonment is illegal given the baby's advanced age. The Illinois Safe Haven law only allows children up to 30 days old to be left with personnel at designated safe havens like hospitals.

Anyone with information is asked to call Calumet Area police at 312-747-8274.
