Workers at Illinois’ State Capitol building were briefly told to shelter in place Thursday afternoon as authorities investigated an "unknown substance."
The Springfield Fire Department confirmed a Hazmat team was called to the building to investigate what it described as a "powder type call."
Illinois Secretary of State's office confirmed an "unknown substance in a clear bag" was found just after 1 p.m. in a second-floor men's restroom.
Reports from inside the building indicated people were being told to shelter in place. An emergency alert could be heard in the background during numerous phone calls to the building.
The lockdown was lifted just before 2:30 p.m. and the building reopened, according to Dave Druker, spokesman for the Illinois Secretary of State's Office.
No injuries were reported but the substance was still being examined.
