Arrieta's Recent Success Puts Him Among History Makers

Jake Arrieta is putting together one of the best seasons by a Chicago Cubs pitcher in recent memory, but his performance over his last 15 starts has left in him some truly exclusive company.

Over those last 15 starts, Arrieta has struck out over 100 batters, racked up 12 victories and kept his ERA under 1.00. In the modern era of baseball (since 1920), there are only two other pitchers who have accomplished the feat: Bob Gibson and Luis Tiant, both of whom pulled off that impressive trick during the 1968 season.

Arrieta has put himself firmly into Cy Young Award contention with his successes this season, but he still has some work to do to catch up to Zack Greinke of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who is posting a 1.68 ERA and a 16-3 record so far this season for the NL West leaders.

Arrieta’s next start is slated for Friday evening when he takes on the Philadelphia Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love.
