Arrieta Goes for 20th Win As Cubs Battle Pirates Wednesday

Arrieta would be the first Cubs pitcher in 14 years to hit the milestone

The Chicago Cubs will be trying to gain ground on the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night, but there will be something else on the line as Jake Arrieta takes the mound.

Arrieta will be gunning for his 20th win of the season when he makes the start for the Cubs. No Cubs pitcher has achieved that milestone since Jon Lieber won 20 games for the team back in the 2001 regular season.

Arrieta’s record currently stands at 19-6 on the season, with a sparkling 1.99 ERA and 204 strikeouts in 199 innings pitched. He has been especially dominant in recent weeks, putting up an 8-0 record with a 0.46 ERA over that span.

In fact, those numbers are some of the best ever in an eight start stretch in MLB history, with Bob Gibson serving as the only other pitcher to put up an 8-0 record and a sub-0.50 ERA in an eight start stretch in the last 102 years according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The Cubs will desperately need Arrieta to put up a good performance Wednesday night, as they are trying to make up ground on the Pirates in the wild card race. Thanks to their doubleheader split on Tuesday, the Cubs still trail Pittsburgh by four games for the top spot in the wild card standings, with five games remaining between the two teams this season.

So far in three starts this season against the Pirates, Arrieta has a 2-1 record with an ERA of just 0.86, striking out 19 batters in 21 innings pitched as he’s held their team batting average to .155 against him.
