Arrieta, Cubs Look to End Oct. 12 Losing Streak Monday

Monday marks the 108th anniversary of the team’s first World Series title

The Chicago Cubs are looking to grab a 2-1 series lead against the St. Louis Cardinals Monday when they send Jake Arrieta to the mound, but the team can also mark another milestone in their history when they take the field at Wrigley.

That’s because Monday marks the 108th anniversary of the team’s first World Series title, which they secured with a 2-0 win over the Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of the Fall Classic. The win was actually their second consecutive on Oct. 12, as they also beat the Chicago White Sox by a score of 1-0 in Game 4 of the 1906 World Series on that date.

Unfortunately for the Cubs, their good run of luck on Oct. 12 came to an end after that World Series title was clinched.

In the following year, they fell 8-3 to the Tigers in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, and while they did come back to win that series, they weren’t so lucky the next two times they played on Oct. 12.

In 1928 the Cubs faced the Philadelphia Athletics on that date, losing a 10-8 slugfest in Game 4 of the World Series. The Cubs also played on Oct. 12, 2003 against the Florida Marlins, losing a 4-0 decision in Game 5 of the NLCS.

Of course, if any Cubs pitcher is capable of reversing history in the postseason, it’s Arrieta. In the NL Wild Card Game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Arrieta helped the Cubs secure their first ever victory in a game contested on Oct. 7.
