Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich formally received the pallium at Holy Name Cathedral Sunday, marking the first time an archbishop in Chicago received the special cloth outside of Rome.
In June, Cupich traveled to Rome to unofficially receive the pallium from Pope Francis. The pallium is a piece of cloth worn over an archbishop's vestments to symbolize his connection to the pope, and it is reserved for newly named metropolitan archbishops.
Traditionally, archbishops receive the pallium in Rome, but Pope Francis changed the tradition this year and said the pallium should be worn for the first time back home.
"We are a community that goes after the lost sheep, not only those who have strayed, but also those who are ignored, forgotten," Cupich said during the Mass.
Catholics lined up outside Holy Name Cathedral Sunday to be a part of the first pallium Mass in Chicago.
Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, was present at the Mass as the pope's representative.
Another special guest made the trip to Holy Name Cathedral as well — Archbishop Robert Lynch of Tampa Bay, Florida. The two made a wager on the Stanley Cup, which Cupich won.
