Amazon's Chicago Job Fair Draws Long Lines

The company said it was seeking a wide variety of employees from fulfillment center staff to computer scientists building the technology behind Amazon Go

Amazon's Chicago job fair drew a big crowd as a line of people wrapped around the block with dozens hoping for their chance at employment.

The Chicago job fair was part of Amazon's nationwide Career Day, which also took place in five other major U.S. cities on Tuesday to recruit more than 30,000 full and part-time employees.

The company said it was seeking a wide variety of employees from fulfillment center staff to computer scientists building the technology behind Amazon Go, according to a news release.

Positions start at $15 an hour and include benefits and skills training as part of a $700 million initiative to help employees gain new skills.

Chicago’s Career Day event runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Veriport Chicago facility, located at 1339 S. Wood St. on the city's Near West Side.

Amazon has increased efforts to expand its footprint in the Chicago area with the announcement of plans for additional workers and office space in the Loop along with a new store in Oak Brook.

Although not required, Amazon encourages job seekers to register online ahead of Tuesday’s event.

Hiring events were also scheduled in Arlington, Virginia, Boston, Dallas, Nashville and Seattle.
