911 Call Released in Cold Case Wheeling Murder

Jamie Santos was found strangled to death 20 years ago today at her Wheeling apartment

Wheeling police on Friday released a mysterious 911 call in the cold-case murder of a 27-year-old woman.

Jamie Santos was found strangled to death 20 years ago today at her apartment on the 1700 block of Stonehedge Court, police said.

A man anonymously called paramedics the morning of Oct. 28, 1991 from a pay phone at a Buffalo Grove shopping center to report a woman "not breathing" and "turning blue." He gave her address, blocks from where he made the call at Buffalo Grove and Dundee roads.

When operators asked, the man did not say whether he was at the house.

Officers found Santos' body about 11:35 a.m., police said. She died of suffocation.

Two decades later, the case has gone unsolved, and police don't know if the caller is connected to the murder or if he “simply came across a terrible crime,” according to a department press release.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the caller or the murder to contact Wheeling Police Department at 847-459-2632. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for the positive identification of the caller.

All information received will be kept confidential, police said.
