9-Year-Old Boy Killed, Man Wounded in Shooting on Chicago's South Side

A 9-year-old boy was killed and a man critically wounded in a shooting on Chicago's Far South Side late Friday, according to police.

Authorities said the shooting occurred around 11:13 p.m. in the 3500 block of E. 97th St. in the city’s East Side neighborhood.

The victims were in an SUV traveling westbound on 97th St. when a gray sedan pulled alongside them and someone inside opened fire, officials said.

The 9-year-old boy was shot in the back and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital where he later died, according to police. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the fatality and further details, including his identity, were not available.

The 31-year-old man was shot in the back, face and chest, authorities said. He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center.

"I was speaking on the phone in my house when I hear screaming, it's just screaming, screaming," said a witness at the scene. "He tells everybody in front, 'They killed my son, they killed my son,'" he recalled.

No one is in custody in connection with the shooting, according to police, who continue to investigate.
