9 Cars Struck in High-Speed Crash on Chicago's Southwest Side

A high-speed crash impacted nine cars on Chicago's Southwest Side late Wednesday, according to police.

The chain reaction crash took place in the 3000 block of West 55th Street in the city's Gage Park neighborhood, authorities said.

At around 11:05 p.m., two cars - a woman driving a Chevy Sonic and a man driving a Hyundai - were traveling westbound on 55th Street at a high rate of speed when the Sonic crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, according to Chicago police.

The vehicle sideswiped both the Hyundai and a Chevy Trailblazer headed eastbound, causing the cars to "lose control" and strike a total of six parked vehicles, officials said.

Authorities said the Hyundai rolled over in the crash, and the drivers of both the Hyundai and the Sonic fled the scene on foot.

Neighbors said they heard a loud "boom" last night and rushed outside to find the cars and car parts strewn down the block.

"I was thinking, I hope my mom’s car didn’t get hit because we’ve been fixing it up lately," said area resident Diego Navarro, whose mother's car was one of the vehicles damaged.

No injuries were reported in the crash, and police are still searching for the drivers involved. It was unclear whether there would charges filed or any citations issued in the case.
