Three Crashes Combine in 9-Car Pile-Up

Two injured in I-88 crash

Two people were hurt this morning in a chain-reaction crash on the tollway near west suburban Downers Grove.

Three separate crashes involving nine cars created a mess of steel at about 5:42 a.m. along a strip of westbound Interstate 88 at mile marker 132.7, near Interstate 355, according to an Illinois State Police District 15 Master Sgt. Carlita Joe.

Police initially thought the incident was all one crash, but later learned there were actually three separate collisions involving, Joe said.

Ambulances from Downers Grove took two drivers to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in good conditon, the master sergeant said.

Though the causes of the pile-ups remain under investigation, it appears the crashes were rear-endings.

Lanes were blocked from the time of the accident until about 6:24 a.m. while the vehicles involved were moved to the right shoulder.
