Shootings across Chicago have killed at least three people and wounded five others even as thousands of police officers work longer shifts over the long Fourth of July weekend.
Police are trying to avoid a repeat of last year's bloody holiday weekend when 14 people were killed and dozens more were wounded in more than 60 shooting incidents.
According to police, some of the eight shootings so far since Thursday afternoon were gang-related.
In one of those, a gunman walked up to a 26-year-old man sitting on a porch in the Back of the Yards neighborhood and shot him in the back.
In in the Brainerd area, a gunman in a van shot and killed a 46-year-old man in the head in an ally. A 43-year-old woman walking with him was wounded.
