Power lines were down and a stretch of road closed after a van carrying nine people crashed into a pole Wednesday on Chicago’s South Side.

The van hit the pole about 4 p.m. near 25th Street and Ashland Avenue, Chicago fire officials said. Seven people were taken to the hospital—three in fair condition and four in serious—while two others refused treatment. Wires came down across Ashland after the single-vehicle crash. Ashland was closed shortly after 5 p.m. between 22nd and 31st streets, officials said.

ComEd was working to restore the downed lines.
