A grandmother has been charged in the death of her 7-month-old granddaughter after sources say the baby was suffocated and her throat cut with a power saw because she wouldn't stop crying.
Manuela Rodriguez, 52, was charged with one count of murder after her infant granddaughter was found dead in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood Monday.
Officials believe Rodriguez tried to suffocate the baby, and sources said a power saw was used to cut the baby’s throat.
Rose "Rosie" Herrara died of multiple blunt force injuries to the head and probable suffocation from a sock placed in her mouth, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The medical examiner's office said "incise wounds were present but did not contribute to the child's death."
The infant was found unresponsive around 9:40 a.m. in the 2800 block of South Avers Avenue and pronounced dead at the scene.
Rodriguez was taken into custody Monday after being taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
She is scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing Tuesday afternoon.

The state's attorney's office could not immediately confirm if Rodriguez had hired an attorney.
