The Chicago Fire Department confirmed Engine 109 was responding to a call when a van struck the back of the fire truck

At least six people, including two children, were taken to the hospital after their van crashed into a fire truck on Chicago's Southwest Side Monday morning.

The Chicago Fire Department confirmed Engine 109 was responding to a call when a van struck the back of the fire truck near 31st and California.

Four adults and two children were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, all in critical condition, the fire department said.

No one on the fire truck was injured, CFD spokesman Larry Langford confirmed.

Authorities believe the children injured were “not restrained” while riding in the van.
