$6 Million Bond for Man Charged with Fatal Shooting, Chase in Riverdale

Deonte Smith was charged with first-degree murder after shooting two people, one fatally, and then leading police on a high-speed chase to Chicago

Bond was set at $6 million for a man who allegedly shot two people, one fatally, before leading police on a chase from the south suburbs into Chicago last week.

Deonte Smith, 25, was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated fleeing and eluding, according to a statement from Riverdale police.

Police received a call of shots fired and responded to a home in the 13800 block of Stewart Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 2, police said at the time.

Officers found two people who had been shot inside the home, a female whose injuries were not life-threatening and a 35-year-old man, police said.

The man, identified as Kevin Denson, was taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, where he was pronounced dead at 5:17 p.m., police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

The female was shot once in the arm and taken to Ingalls Hospital, police said.

Smith then led police on a chase through the south suburbs to 116th and Laflin in Chicago, where he was taken into custody, police said.

A judge set Smith’s bond at $6 million on Thursday. His next court date wasn’t immediately known.
