A 5th grader created a petition to save world-famous Halloween decorations at a suburban Chicago home that some neighbors have said are too distracting.
After 18 years, enough people have said no to the decorations at the Naperville home that have made headlines across the world. Last year, thousands flocked to the residence to see its epic light display synced to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody" (as seen below).
However, the Board of the Ashbury Homeowners Association made a “Holiday Decorations Rule,” limiting a person’s decorations to 50 percent of their yard, not including lights, according to the Chicago Tribune. The rule also states that the display cannot be set up more than 30 days before and must be taken down by 30 days after the holiday.
On Monday, the board heard 11-year-old Sara Marston read her petition to reverse their decision.
"I know that the new rule says decorations can only be 50 percent of your yard,” Marston said. “They came to us house because it was 110 percent. You wouldn't want people to cut 50 percent of their grass."
Her online petition has more than 8,000 signatures -- the same estimated number of people who drove by the home last Halloween.
"I'm so sad about it because it's been a part of my life since I was little,” Marston said.
The subdivision board has not yet given NBC Chicago its reaction to Marston’s petition.
