$5M Pot Hidden in Carrot Shipment

Two men from Florida were charged with possession of more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana

Two Florida men were arrested in Elk Grove Village this week with more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana concealed in a shipment of carrots.

Abraham Garcia-Acosta, 44, of Loxahatchee, Fla., and Diego Diaz-Perez, 49, of West Palm Beach, Fla., were charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver. Bond was set at $50,000.

A Cook County Sheriff's narcotics unit investigated Garcia-Acosta and Diaz-Perez based on a tip and followed them to two different Elk Grove Village hotels.

Police pulled over their truck for a traffic violation on Monday and found 80 plastic-wrapped bundles of marijuana. The drugs, valued at approximately $5,325,000, were concealed in a load of carrots in the truck's trailer.

The men are due in Chicago court on April 8.
