5-Year-Old Girl Killed in Hit-and-Run While Trying to Cross Street With Sister in NW Indiana

Witnesses described the vehicle as a black or dark grey SUV, possibly containing a spare tire mounted to the back, authorities said

A 5-year-old girl was killed in a hit-and-run while trying to cross the street with her sister in northwest Indiana Tuesday.

Delaney Klewer was walking with her sister just before 6 p.m. in the 300 block of Broadway Street in Michigan City when a vehicle traveling westbound on the road struck her and fled the scene, police said.

"I don't understand how anyone can snuff out a life, a life that was so bright, and so young, and not even have the courtesy to stop," Delaney's father Matthew said. "You need to turn yourself in."

Klewer was taken to St. Anthony Hospital by LaPorte County first responders but ultimately died of her injuries.

"When she got hit I was so sad," Delaney's sister Sarah said. "I tried to wake her up but she didn't. He didn't stop."

A photo of the car revealed a silver Chevy Equinox, possibly containing a spare tire mounted to the back, authorities said.

Anyone with information on the crime is being asked to call (21) 874-3221, ext. 1008 or ext. 1045.

The family has started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for a reward for information leading to an arrest.
