Boat Crashes into Breakwater; 5 Rescued

Nearby Coast Guard vessel responds quickly.

Five people were hospitalized after they were rescued from a boat that smashed into a breakwater and capsized in Lake Michigan Saturday night.

Around 10:35 p.m., a boat with at least five people aboard struck a breakwater, which caused it to capsize in the lake at 98th Street, according to police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

Five people were rescued and taken to area hospitals.

One was taken in serious to critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, two were taken in fair to serious condition to Advocate Trinity Hospital, and two were taken in good to fair condition to Trinity Hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado.

U.S. Coast Guard crews were already in the area doing their normal patrol and were able to respond almost immediately when the crash happened, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael Phillips said.

Three people were standing on the breakwater when Coast Guard crews arrived while two more were clinging to the vessel, a 22-foot power boat. Their ages and genders were not immediately known, according to Alfaro and Rosado.
