5 Year Old Dies in Father's Day Drowning

Witnesses say the child jumped in after a toy he dropped in the water

A five year-old boy drowned Sunday afternoon after he jumped into Jackson Park Harbor to retrieve a toy he’d dropped in the water.

Witnesses say at least seven people jumped into the harbor along with the child’s father to try and save the boy, but the murky water made it hard to see.

Rescue divers with the Chicago Fire Department eventually found the child, at least 20 minutes after he entered the water.

Crews took him to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead about an hour later.
