Four people were injured, two of them seriously, when a police chase ended in a multi-vehicle crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway Friday morning.
Just after 2 a.m., officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 200 block of West 47th Street on the city's South Side saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, authorities said.
The officers were trying to pull the vehicle over before it traveled onto the expressway and struck two other vehicles, police said.
The driver of the vehicle being chased was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. A passenger in the vehicle was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition.
The driver of one of the vehicles hit in the crash had to be "extracted" by Chicago Fire Department officials and was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.
The driver of a second vehicle was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition.
No other injuries were reported and charged were pending, police said.

The crash shut down local lanes on the expressway in the area for at least an hour.
An investigation by Area Central detectives remained ongoing Friday morning.
