Autopsy: 3-Year-Old Peoria Boy Drowns in Illinois River During Field Trip

The boy was one of eight children brought from a daycare center to a riverside recreation center for a day trip

An autopsy determined that a 3-year-old boy from Peoria drowned in the Illinois River during a class field trip.

The body of Ravante L. Ward was found Friday in the river in Peoria. Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said the boy was one of eight children brought from a daycare center to a riverside recreation center for a day trip.

Ingersoll told the (Peoria) Journal Star that the investigation into the child's death is continuing, and a coroner's inquest will be scheduled.

Police spokeswoman Amy Dotson said earlier that officers were called to the area after adults who noticed the boy was missing found him in the water.

The river is well above flood stage.

The Park District, which owns the site, says one of its lifeguards performed CPR on the boy.
