3 Tornadoes Touched Down in Illinois, Northwest Indiana: NWS

Wind gusts in excess of 70 mph, hail ranging from the size of peas to golf balls and rainfall totals of more than two inches were reported within less than an hour

At least three tornadoes touched down in Illinois and northwest Indiana during Memorial Day storms, the National Weather Service reported.

Citing preliminary assessments, the NWS determined tornadoes touched down briefly in Plattville and Paw Paw in Illinois and in Dyer, Indiana. All three were EF-0, according to the weather service.

On Monday, trained spotters indicated a tornado touched down east of Sauk Village and near Dyer, Indiana during the storms.

There were no early reports of injuries in the storms, but the tornado did lead to several downed tree branches and minor damage to homes in Dyer. There did not appear to be any damage associated with the tornadoes in Plattville or Paw Paw, which were both on the ground for less than a minute, the NWS reported.

In addition, across southern Cook County and northern Will County there were "sporadic damage reports" from wind.

Memorial Day afternoon in the Chicago area saw severe storms that dumped piles of golf ball-sized hail and brought intense winds and torrential rain.

The first wave of storms brought Tornado Warnings to numerous counties. Wind gusts in excess of 70 mph, hail ranging from the size of peas to golf balls and rainfall totals of more than two inches were reported within less than an hour.

As the storms made their way through the area, more than 12,800 ComEd customers were left without power, particularly in the western and southern suburbs. ComEd said it was working to restore service as soon as possible.
