The cause of the fire is under investigation but officials confirm there were no working smoke detectors found

Three people were injured, including a 4-year-old boy and a firefighter, after a fire broke out in an Aurora apartment building early Sunday morning.

Officials said a total of 33 firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 300 block of South Avenue around 1:46 a.m. Sunday.

After a forced entry into the two-story duplex unit, firefighters located two victims on the first floor—a 4-year-old boy who was lying on the couch in the living room, police said, and a 32-year-old man who was found lying on the floor near the front door.

Both victims were transported to nearby hospitals in critical condition, authorities said.

A firefighter suffered a non-life-threatening injury as a result of the fire, and was treated and later released form an area hospital.

Officials estimated a total of $50,000 in damages, and Victim Services are assisting the residents in the neighboring unit with temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but officials confirm there were no working smoke detectors found.
