A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was shot in the head while driving with her mother Tuesday in Chicago Heights, police said.

The child was in the back seat of a car just after 6 a.m. when police said her mother heard what she thought was the sound of a tire popping in the 1600 block of School Street.

The mother told officers she later turned onto Aberdeen Street, just two blocks away, and heard her child start to cry. That’s when she turned around and saw blood coming from the child’s head, according to the Chicago Heights Police Department.

The mom quickly drove her child to a hospital in Olympia Fields with a gunshot wound to the right side of her head. She was ultimately airlifted to University of Chicago Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.

Officers investigating the shooting found a crime scene in the 1600 block of Aberdeen Street, authorities said.

Police said an investigation remained ongoing Tuesday afternoon. Anyone with information on what happened is being asked to call the Chicago Heights Detective Division at (708) 756-6422.
