3 Hurt in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Dan Ryan Expressway

The accident, which involved two semis and a car, happened around 3 a.m. in the inbound lanes of the expressway near 79th Street

Three people were critically wounded after a multi-vehicle crash partially shut down the Dan Ryan Expressway early Monday morning.

The accident, which involved two semis and a car, happened around 3 a.m. in the inbound lanes of the expressway near 79th Street.

Fire officials said two people were transported from the scene to University of Chicago Medical Center and a third was taken to Stroger Hospital. All three were in serious-to-critical condition.

The crash prompted a Hazmat scene as fuel spilled onto the expressway. Numerous lanes were closed for about three hours, causing major backups as the morning rush hour got underway.

All lanes were reopened around 6 a.m.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation, police said.
