3 Arrested After Police Find Mistreated Animals, Child, Ammunition in Portage Park Home

Officers were initially called to Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood around 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a domestic dispute

Three people were arrested Monday after authorities found mistreated animals, guns and ammunition in a Northwest Side home.

Officers were initially called to Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood around 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a domestic dispute, according to police.

Upon arrival to a home in the 6000 block of West Dakin, a small child and multiple animals were found living in deplorable conditions, police said.

Chicago Animal Control was called to the scene after police found the home’s stench and conditions were largely due to at least a dozen dogs and cats inside.

Responders could be seen removing at least four dogs from the home as well as around 7 caged cats.

Neighbors told NBC Chicago the dogs in the home “barked incessantly” and were often vicious to residents in the area who walked by. They said they have no idea how many animals were actually living inside.

Some ammunition and weapons were also recovered.

Three adults were placed under arrest by police – the homeowner and two others – and the 9-year-old boy living in the home was taken into protective custody.

Police said they have launched an investigation into the incident. CPD is also investigating the possible child endangerment.

The father of one of the men who was placed under arrest was at the scene and claimed to NBC Chicago there was nothing going on in the home that was illegal.
