28,000 Students Applied for 7,000 U of I Slots

University of Illinois reports a 5 percent hike in applications

Despite the 9.5 percent raise in tuition this year, the University of Illinois is reporting a 5 percent hike in applications.

Around 28,700 students applied for the 7,000 openings in the university's fall freshman class. That's a 1,500 increase over 2010 applications and 6,000 more than five years ago.

Stacey Kostel, undergraduate admissions director, says 19,000 total applicants were admitted this year. He won't know acceptance numbers until next week.

Kostel says this year's acceptance numbers are looking good with a freshman class of 7,000, a slight increase from last year's 6,930.
