Volunteer Accused of Bilking Little League's Money

A volunteer with the Gurnee Youth Baseball league is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the organization.

Police say Donald Schaefer, 52, of Grayslake, stole more than $80,000 from the league, according to a criminal complaint. He's accused of writing checks to himself from 2007 to 2012

"There were some checks written against the league that didn't make sense to the new guy, and that's what got the ball rolling," said Gurnee Police Department Commander Willie Meyer.

Parents and the teams' sponsor, the American Legion Post, can't believe that amount of money is involved.

"It's hard to believe that something like this would happen in an area like this," parent Tony Raash said. "It makes me very mad. We pay our money and we do our things and I had three kids in the community in this game and it just doesn't make sense."

Schaefer was arrested at his home Monday morning after police say he refused to turn himself in.

He was being held on a $30,000 bond.
