All northbound lanes of traffic were closed after multiple people were hurt when a vehicle sustained gunfire and crashed Monday night on Interstate 57 near south suburban Calumet Park.
Bullets struck the vehicle about 7:55 p.m. on I-57 near 123rd Street, according to Illinois State Police. The vehicle then veered off the roadway and struck a pole.
Three people were taken to hospitals, but it wasn’t clear whether they were wounded in the shooting or injured during the crash, ISP said.
As of 9:50 p.m., all northbound lanes of I-57 were closed and traffic was being diverted at 127th Street, ISP said.
No further information was immediately made available.
The shooting was the second to close the expressway since last week.
On Friday, a shooting led to the closure of all northbound lanes. At least a dozen shell casings littered the road as state police shut down nearly 10 blocks of the expressway to investigate a report of shots fired near the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.
A driver called police at 1:48 a.m. to report that he’d been merging onto northbound I-57 from 127th Street when someone fired at his car from another vehicle, according to Illinois State Police.
The car was shot multiple times, but neither the driver nor his passenger was hurt, state police said.
The expressway was closed from 127th Street to 119th Street until about 5:40 a.m. as authorities investigated, state police said.
