Two drivers killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 55 have been identified by the Illinois State Police.
33-year-old Adelaido Torres and 57-year-old Imtiaz Baig of Chicago were pronounced dead Saturday morning after their cars collided on Interstate 55 near Kedzie Avenue, according to authorities.
Police say that a preliminary investigation has revealed that a red Nissan, driven by Torres, was driving northbound on the southbound side of the interstate at approximately 4:25 a.m. when his vehicle struck a Toyota sedan, driven by Baig, near Kedzie Avenue.
Both drivers were taken to area hospitals, where they were pronounced dead.
There were two passengers in the Toyota sedan, identified as a 19-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman. Both victims were taken to an area hospital, where they are listed in critical condition.
Authorities say it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The highway remained closed for four hours as the investigation took place.
