1 of Two Metra Workers Dead After Explosion on Northwest Side

One of two Metra workers injured after an explosion took place near Metra train tracks Saturday morning has died, authorities said.

The incident occurred near the Grayland station on the Metra Milwaukee District North line around 11:45 a.m. on the 4500 block of West Byron Street, police said, and it caused a train delay of about 45 minutes.

Officials said the individuals were working on a project from last week.

“We usually work on the Metra lines on the weekend because there is lower traffic,” said spokesperson Meg Riley.

Both workers were transported to the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

According to the Cook County medical examiner's office, one of the workers was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon.

The cause of the incident was not immediately known.
