2 Killed in Overnight Crash on Dan Ryan Expressway

Two drivers were killed in a crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway on Chicago's South Side early Sunday, according to police.

Around 2:56 a.m., a 2017 black Chevrolet was stopped on the right shoulder of the southbound express lanes of I-94 near 43rd Street when it was rear-ended by a 2016 blue Jeep traveling at a high rate of speed, according to a release from the Illinois State Police.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 72-year-old Eugene N. Ackerman of Boynton Beach, Florida; and the driver of the Jeep, 27-year-old Michael Schaaf of Tinley Park, were both pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

There were no passengers in either vehicle and no other injuries were reported.

Schaaf was driving "extremely reckless" before the crash, police said. All outbound lanes were temporarily closed following the crash, but reopened several hours later.
