2 Women Shot During Robbery in West Rogers Park

Two women were shot during an attempted robbery Sunday while they walked the typically quiet streets of their North Side neighborhood, police said.

The women, ages 23 and 28, were walking on the sidewalk about 12:40 a.m. in the 6100 block of North Maplewood in Rogers Park when they were approached by two armed males who announced a robbery, according to Chicago Police. One of the robbers demanded money, but when the woman said they didn’t have any, he opened fire.

“He said give me what you have, whatever you have with you, give it to me,” Maryam Nosseir, one of the victims, told NBC 5. “I got scared.”

The women were so startled they didn’t understand what happened, Nosseir said. One of the men fired a shot, grazing one of the women’s legs and striking Nosseir in the foot.

“We ran inside to the backyard and suddenly I felt so much pain and I couldn’t feel my feet anymore,” she said.

Nosseir, her sister and their friend hope police will bring their assailants to justice.

“I asked the cops a couple of times yesterday, ‘are we safe in our neighborhood?’” Maiada Nosseir, Maryam’s sister, told NBC 5. “He said you picked one of the safest ones, but you’re not safe in Chicago no matter what.”
