2 Women Attacked With Hammer Near Navy Pier

Both women struck in the face, police said

Two women were attacked by a man with a hammer Tuesday evening on a lakefront path near Chicago's Navy Pier.

Police said the women, both 55 and from the suburbs, were walking along the path around 6:27 p.m. in the 500 block of North Lake Shore Drive when they were approached by a man.

The man demanded their purses, police said, and hit them both in the face with a hammer before running off.

"She had blood running all down the front of her face. It was something that looked out of a horror movie," said Tya Lichtie, who witnessed the aftermath of the attack.

The man was apprehended a short time later near the scene but had not been charged with a crime as of Wednesday evening.

Both women were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition. The women did not know the man, police said.

No charges were filed as of Wednesday morning.
